Hale boosts North girls past South

Cali Hale isn't one to give up easily.

The North Medford sophomore was victorious in the match of the day as the Black Tornado defeated rival South Medford, 5-3, in Southwest Conference girls tennis Thursday at North Medford High.

Hale lost the first set, then trailed in each of the next two sets before posting a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Janelle Legacion at No. 4 singles.

"She pulled it out and did a super job," said Tornado coach Dale Jensen. "I was so impressed. She played her little heart out."

Marina Todd accounted for one of South Medford's wins at No. 1 singles. She topped Julie Rhodes, 6-2, 6-1.

North won the other three singles matches.

"The team played extremely well," said Jensen. "The last time we played South, we didn't do as well. I've seen great improvement in the girls. I'm very, very pleased. They're playing smarter, and smart is good."
