Sheldon shoots by Crater in opener

CENTRAL POINT — With Crater adopting a new style of play in girls soccer, head coach Ed Lindbloom called Tuesday's season opener "a learning experience" against Sheldon at Anhorn Field.

The Irish scored four unanswered goals, many stemming from misplays or miscommunication by the Comets, to win the nonleague match going away, 6-1.

Marissa Dalton gave Crater something to cheer about in the 30th minute with a fine play deep in Sheldon territory. The Comets had lost the ball after working it upfield, but Dalton anticipated a pass between the Irish stopper and sweeper and intercepted the ball and deposited a shot in the net to make it 2-1.

  • SOUTH EUGENE 1, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — South Eugene scored in the 20th minute and kept South Medford at bay to earn the nonleague triumph.

  • NORTH VALLEY 3, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Merlin, North Valley's back line created opportunities and stifled Eagle Point in a season-opening nonconference victory.

Barbieri registered seven saves.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 2 — McKensie Ragan and Carly Smith each scored first-half goals to lead Cascade Christian to a 2-0 halftime lead at U.S. Cellular.

ROGUE RIVER 3, CRESWELL 0 — At Creswell, junior Allison Coulter tallied two goals and sophomore Savannah Poston's defensive play helped Rogue River post the shutout.

The Chieftains led 1-0 at halftime on Coulter's goal on a through ball in the 32nd minute.
