Solorio helps propel North past Bend
Junior forward Jesus Solorio scored twice to lead North Medford's boys soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Class 5A power Bend at Hoffbuhr Field on Saturday.
Solorio took a nice through pass from Brandon Schoenmann to put the Black Tornado (1-0-1) on the board first in the 33rd minute. He then added an insurance goal from 15 yards away in the second half for the final margin.
Freshman midfielder Garrett Byrd blasted home North's second goal, an 8-yard boot, right before halftime.
ASHLAND 4, KLAMATH UNION 1 — At Ashland, seniors Neil Presicci and Dakota Wolff each had a goal and an assist as Ashland dominated its nonconference season opener at Ashland Middle School.
Presicci fired home a 20-yard shot following a through ball by Wolff in the ninth minute, and Wolff capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.
Also scoring for Ashland were Ian Murray and Dylan Fisher.
The Grizzlies travel to face Eagle Point on Tuesday to open the key series between the 5A Southern Oregon Hybrid peers.
HIDDEN VALLEY 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Murphy, Kevin Payne scored a hat trick in the second half and added an assist to lead Hidden Valley to the nonconference win.
Robin Klimczak scored off a Payne assist to help the Mustangs (2-0) to a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Sean Murphy added a goal off a Jason Kellogg assist, then Payne scored three straight with assists from Caleb Aldstadt and Klimczak.
Chris Stuke posted his second shutout in goal.
ST. MARY'S 6, REDDING CHRISTIAN 2 — At Redding, Calif., Poncho Acuna-Miranda scored three goals and junior Reid Arne provided four assists for St. Mary's (0-2).
With the scored tied 1-all in the first half, the Crusaders tallied three goals in the final minute to break the game open.
Also getting goals for St. Mary's were Renzo Marthini, Garrett Coughlin and Juan Becerra-Felix, who also had an assist.
Girls
NORTH MEDFORD 1, BEND 1 — At Bend, Sarah Chambers ran onto a 30-yard free kick by Michelle Benitez for a nice one-touch goal in the 61st minute to tie the match for North Medford.
Chambers, who played a pivotal role in the midfield with Kimmy Parker, nearly netted another goal a few minutes later and the Black Tornado (0-1-1) had a last-minute effort denied by Bend to close out the contest.
Bend scored in the 33rd minute on a breakaway to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
MOUNTAIN VIEW 6, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — At Bend, Molly McCool scored three times and Mountain View posted a 3-0 lead by halftime over South Medford (0-3).
Tash Anderson added two goals and Edna Itarra scored the other for the Cougars.
ASHLAND 2, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, junior Taylor Zehren recorded two assists to help Ashland open its season with a nonconference road win.
Zehren connected with teammate Riley Smith in the 38th minute, with Smith's point-blank header off the corner kick giving the Grizzlies the lead for good.
In the 80th, Zehren completed a nice run by passing to Savannah Cleveland, who punched home an insurance goal from about 14 yards away.
Ashland hosts Southern Oregon Hybrid foe Eagle Point on Tuesday.
ROGUE RIVER 1, PHOENIX 0 — At Talent, freshman Kristin Cutting's goal proved to be the game-winner in the nonconference match at Hagler-James Park.
Cutting beat Phoenix goalie Kya McAlister from just inside the 18 off a pass from Jessa Fricke in the 70th minute.
Sophia Pankowski had a good scoring opportunity for the Pirates (0-1) late in the game but her shot from close range went wide.
Hilary Sinner paced the Phoenix offense and McAlister had seven saves in net.
Rogue River (3-0) received strong performances from sophomore Savannah Poston and freshman reserve Samantha Henricks. Chieftain goalie Brittany Coulter recorded the shutout and had three saves.
ST. MARY'S 6, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 0 — Anna Thorndike notched a hat trick and foreign exchange student Deema Said had two assists for St. Mary's at U.S. Cellular Park.
Thorndike scored the first of three Crusader goals in the opening half.
Sarah Bennion and Abby Steinsiek added first-period goals and Kailyn Neidetcher tallied the final score.
Gina Barbieri and Lauren Angel split time in goal for the Crusaders (2-0).
NORTH VALLEY 8, ILLINOIS VALLEY 2 — At Cave Junction, Vanessa D'Arpino scored three goals and added three assists to lead North Valley.
Ashley Brown added two goals and the Knights (2-0) also got goals from Heather Cier, Kasey Werner and Kerissa D'Arpino.
Illinois Valley junior Stephanie Agee scored in the 62nd and 68th minutes, with Amanda Brooks earning an assist.
HENLEY 4, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2 — At Klamath Falls, Carly Smith scored a pair of goals to pace the effort for Cascade Christian.
Henley opened a 2-0 lead before Smith answered in the 35th minute off an assist by McKensie Ragan.
Henley scored one minute later to go up 3-1 at halftime, then Smith tallied again in the 52nd minute off a through ball from Kaitlyn Emard to make it 3-2. The Hornets scored six minutes later against Jenna George, who also had a handful of good saves for the Challengers (0-1-1).
