Reyes gains 184 yards in Chieftain win

ROGUE RIVER — A blend of potent offense and stingy defense was just the formula for Rogue River in its quest for its first football victory.

The Chieftains rode the powerful running of Christian Reyes, who scored three touchdowns, and a defense led by linebacker Anton Hall and end Josh Anderson to a 42-0 nonconference victory over Chiloquin Friday.

"Our offense really controlled the clock," said Rogue River coach Marvin Grover, whose team is 1-2 overall. "And defensively, they had three three-and-outs in the first half, so our defense only had nine plays in the half. That's been a focus of ours, to get the defense going. It feels real good to pitch a shutout."

Reyes carried 15 times for 184 yards and scored on runs of 20, 4 and 20 yards in the first quarter.

The Chieftains had five TDs called back, including two runs by Reyes totaling 90 yards.

Rogue River rushed for 377 yards, getting 88 from Andy Valencia, 62 from Levi Girardot and 43 from Daniel Varela.

Girardot completed 6 of 12 passes for 89 yards and one TD. He was intercepted once.

"We played well," said Grover. "I'm proud of the kids for going out and playing hard. It's much easier once you get that first win of the season done and over with."
