Phelps, Zhu lead Black Tornado girls

STANFORD, Calif. — Two North Medford girls ran times that rank in the top 10 in school history as the Black Tornado fared well at the massive Stanford Cross Country Invitational.

The meet on the Stanford University Golf Course attracted 2,430 high school runners, who competed in six boys and six girls divisions.

North Medford was in Division 3, Phoenix was in Division 4 and St. Mary's was in Division 5.

Junior Brenna Phelps covered the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 12 seconds, placing seventh in the division out of 187 entrants. Her time is the fourth fastest in school history.

Teammate Jennifer Zhu, a senior, ran 19:57 and was 21st as the Tornado placed 12th among 27 teams. Her time ranks eighth.

The North boys were paced by sophomore Devyn Baldovino, who dropped 40 seconds off his personal best with a time of 16:53. Baldovino was 29th in a field of 184.

North's Stetson Smith placed 36th in 17:03 and John Hokanson 55th in 17:33, helping the Black Tornado to eighth place.

Phoenix's boys placed 11th out of 34 teams, and the girls were 17th of 29.

Jorge Gil Juarez was ninth for the Pirates in 16:18, a personal best. Max Hamilton placed 19th in 16:34.

For the Phoenix girls, Sarah Hagy was 56th in 20:57 and Anya Gandy 66th in 21:07.

The St. Mary's boys were 12th out of 34 teams, and the girls were 14th among 15 teams.

The Crusader boys' Tate Jacobson placed 11th in 16:44, and Julio Silva was 23rd in 17:24.

On the girls side, Kira Heycke of St. Mary's was 43rd in 21:33.

RUNIA SHINES — At Portland, Max Runia of Crater ran a personal best to place 12th in the Jim Danner Championship at Portland Meadows.

Runia clocked 15:57.98 for 5,000 meters, while teammate Jon Obeso was 23rd in 16:13.90, also a PR. Neil Seibert (45th) and Hunter Sanders (47th) also cracked the top 50.

On the girls side, Crater's Sarah Hastings was 29th in 19:39.19, Jessica Vig was 45th in 20:02.65 and Damaris Remigio was 48th in 20:04.49.

In the Division I varsity race, Cascade Christian's Hudson Eustace was 57th in 17:43.78.
