Douglas puts end to Phoenix's season

WINSTON — Phoenix squeezed out a two-point football victory against Douglas in the opening game of the season. In a road Class 4A play-in game Friday night against the Trojans, the Pirates weren't as fortunate.

Ricky Cortes ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns as Douglas ended the Pirates' season with a 24-13 victory.

"They made some big plays when they needed to," Phoenix coach Toby Walker said, "and we didn't catch a break."

With Phoenix trailing 12-7 in the third quarter, Douglas (9-2) capitalized when Cortes fumbled after catching a pass and Dontea Escalante picked up the loose ball and went 30 yards for a touchdown.

Justin Bohn scored his second running touchdown of the game with 5:16 left in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard run to pull the Pirates to within 18-13.

Then Douglas, the Far West League runner-up, answered with a 59-yard drive capped by a Cortes 30-yard TD run for the eventual margin of victory.

Phoenix (5-5) reached the Douglas 16 in the final minute but the drive was stopped on downs.

Bohn completed 14 of 28 passes for 131 yards.

MAZAMA 35, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 14 — At Klamath Falls, senior quarterback Daniel Mathis accounted for five touchdowns for Skyline Conference champion Mazama.

The Vikings (9-1) rushed for 257 of their 323 total yards.

Peter Bell led the Pelicans (7-2) with two touchdowns and a team-high 74 yards rushing.

SUISLAW 19, HIDDEN VALLEY 12 — At Florence, Sonny Tupoa scored two second-half touchdowns on short runs to help Suislaw rally for the play-in victory.

Hidden Valley led 6-0 at halftime on Keith Campbell's 1-yard TD run in the first quarter.

After the Vikings took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter on a Tupoa 5-yard run, the Mustangs answered with a 41-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Kaleb Krauss.

Krauss, who rushed for a team-high 86 yards on 16 carries, completed 10 of 19 passes for 69 yards. Campbell ran eight times for 50 yards for Hidden Valley (5-5).

Class 3A

ILLINOIS VALLEY 27, LAKEVIEW 22 — At Cave Junction, Illinois Valley clinched second place in the Southern Cascade Hybrid and locked up a berth in the 16-team Class 3A playoff bracket.

Quarterback Roger Hults completed 20 of 28 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns.

Fred Hults caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Roger Hults in the fourth quarter, when Lakeview quarterback Kyle Johnson turned on a late rally with two scoring strikes.

Curtis Paulson had five catches for 119 yards, Tyler Robbins five catches for 110 yards and Fred Hults nine catches for 97 yards.

Johnson finished 23-for-45 for 334 yards with three interceptions for Lakeview (7-2, 2-2 SCH), which fumbled the ball six times. The Cougars (6-4, 3-1 SCH) were reliant on the pass, finishing with 27 carries for just minus-6 yards.

BUTTE FALLS 38, PROSPECT 36 — At Butte Falls, senior quarterback Moe Gower tossed two touchdown passes and ran for two as Butte Falls rallied late to win the rivalry game.

Gower found freshman receiver Jeff Seeger on a fade pattern for an 11-yard touchdown to tie the game 36-all with 1:20 remaining. Then Gower passed to Ricardo Balero for the winning two-point conversion.

Hunter Gallagher ran for three touchdowns and passed for another in the first half as Prospect (2-8, 1-6 Dist. 2) took a 28-16 halftime lead.

The Loggers (2-8, 2-5 Dist. 2) erased a 36-24 fourth-quarter deficit on two TD passes by Gower.

Butte Falls rushed for 233 yards, with Gower gaining 187 on 12 carries. Gower was 6-for-18 passing for 79 yards.

Gallagher, a junior quarterback, rushed 15 times for 84 yards, and Scott Gaines tacked on 65 yards on 20 carries.
