Phoenix nabs victory over the Crater JV

PHOENIX — In order to show it had brushed off the rust from Christmas break, the Phoenix girls basketball team was in need of a good outing Monday in preparation for its Skyline Conference opener.

The Pirates had three players score in double figures and overwhelmed the Crater junior varsity in the third quarter to snare a 44-36 triumph.

"I was a little worried about going out after a long Christmas break and going against a great program like Crater," said Phoenix coach Randy Kirkland. "Their JV squad could probably compete at the 4A level. We had to prepare for this game like a conference game. We knew it was going to be a good game, a good fight."

The Pirates (5-4) play South Umpqua on Thursday before opening conference play against Mazama on Friday.

Adrienne Engle had 13 points and six steals for the Pirates. Kelsie Bradfield and Ashley Hendricks scored 12 apiece, with Bradfield grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots.
