Challenger trio lands 3A all-state accolades
Cascade Christian landed three first-team selections on the Class 3A football all-state list while Illinois Valley and Rogue River had one apiece in the recent release.
Leading the way for the Challengers were seniors Garrett Banks (linebacker), Tyler Stickler (defensive back) and Brock Scott (offensive line). Illinois Valley senior Roger Hults was a first-team selection at quarterback, while Rogue River senior Christian Reyes earned first-team recognition at running back.
Banks led Cascade Christian with 64 tackles heading into its semifinal loss to Santiam Christian, while Stickler posted 33 tackles despite missing time after suffering an early season concussion. Scott helped pave the way for a Challenger offense that averaged 305 yards rushing and 343 yards overall.
Cascade Christian (10-3) also received three second-team honors in senior running back Tyler Beard, junior offensive lineman Dillon Huntley and junior defensive lineman Dustin Polan. Beard led the Challengers in rushing, eclipsing 1,000 yards, and was second on the team in tackles.
Also on the second team were Illinois Valley junior tight end Fred Hults and senior offensive lineman Augustine Duarte. The Cougars, who went 7-5 and advanced to the 3A quarterfinals before falling to Santiam Christian, also had senior receiver Curtis Paulson earn honorable mention recognition.
Rainier's Matt Cathcart and Santiam Christian's Brycen Stutzman shared offensive player of the year honors, while Rainier's Nick Huelter was named defensive player of the year. Thor Ware of Rainier was named coach of the year.
