Defense, balanced play boosts St. Mary's girls

St. Mary's swarming defense yielded just seven first-half points as the third-ranked Crusaders coasted to a 65-31 victory in the Crusaders' gym.

Sound all-around efforts by Jamee Batten and Abby Steinsiek helped keep the Crusaders (11-0) undefeated.

Batten had nine points, 13 rebounds and four assists, while Steinsiek registered 12 points, six assists and four steals.

Mackenzie Krieser led the charge with 16 points for St. Mary's, which received 12 points from both Kylee Adderson and Emily Alvarez.

Larissa Stollenger led Lost River with nine points.

MAZAMA 52, PHOENIX 50, OT — At Phoenix, sophomore Hannah Reynolds stole the ball away from Phoenix and scored on a lay-in in the waning seconds of overtime to lift Mazama in the Skyline Conference opener.

Phoenix had possession of the ball with eight seconds to go and was working toward a final shot when Reynolds came up with the play of the game. The Pirates (6-5, 0-1 Skyline), who trailed by as many as 13, had final possession in regulation but Kelsie Bradfield's 13-footer just missed the mark to send the game into OT.

Bradfield registered career-highs in points (25) and steals (7) to go with eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Ashley Hendricks added 10 rebounds.

Kelsey MacPhee scored 20 points to lead Mazama.

Joelle Swanson scored nine points for the Mustangs (5-7, 1-0 Skyline).

Jacquie Nicholson had nine points and nine rebounds and Kenzie Schmoll added eight points and four assists for North Valley (6-7, 0-1 Skyline).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 63, CHILOQUIN 55 — Senior Aleena Cesaro registered a double-double and junior Sydney Hunt poured in a season-high 20 points in the nonconference victory.

Cesaro, who recorded 21 points and 11 rebounds, had six of the Challengers' 10 free-throw makes in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. Cascade Christian went 10 of 14 from the foul line in the final period.

Hunt added six rebounds and three steals and Jordan Martinez turned in nine points — including two key free throws late — for the Challengers (5-5).

Shayna Bradford-Weiser scored 24 points for Chiloquin.

Allison Coulter recorded 12 points and four assists and JoAnne Jessee added six points and eight rebounds.
