Cesaro guides Challengers past Mustangs

MURPHY — From the perspective of Hidden Valley coach Matt Kennedy, Aleena Cesaro appeared to be everywhere for the Cascade Christian girls basketball team Saturday.

The 6-foot senior forward put her team on her shoulders with 21 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Challengers to a 38-33 road victory in nonconference action.

"She was effective off the dribble, she was an active rebounder and got a lot of points inside 10 feet because we would help out and she just kept getting to the ball," said Kennedy. "It seemed like she didn't miss a shot. She was always around the ball and putting it in."

Cesaro played a key role in Cascade Christian opening an 11-2 lead in the opening four minutes, then helped her team stave off a Hidden Valley comeback by going 3-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. The Challengers (6-5) were 7-of-9 from the free-throw line in the final quarter for all but two of their points.

"We needed every single point," Cascade Christian head coach Marvin Denman said.

The Mustangs (5-8) closed within one point a couple times in the fourth quarter but Cascade never relinquished the lead.

"They got off to a good start and we scrambled into it but couldn't quite close it," said Kennedy.

Junior Katie Aguilar had nine points and Jordan Martinez added three steals for the Challengers, while Joelle Swanson had 12 points and 13 rebounds to pace Hidden Valley. The Mustangs also got 10 points from Morgan Hansen and eight points and three steals from Kara Fikso.
