Eagles fall in semis at Classic Classic

REDMOND — The Eagle Point wrestling team captured fourth place at the Oregon Classic on Saturday, capping a fine run in a field full of tough talent.

The Eagles missed a chance at the championship finals after falling to Pendleton 31-27 in the Class 5A semifinals. In the dual for third place, Hood River topped Eagle Point 37-31.

The Eagles paved their way to the semifinals with a strong showing during Friday's pool rounds. They opened with a 40-32 win over Sandy, then scored dominating wins over Summit (63-9) and Marshfield (57-15) to earn their spot in the championship bracket.

Saturday's action began with a 40-33 win over Silverton in the quarterfinals.

Orlando De La Cruz (103), Johnny Wilkerson (171) and Gage Baumer (171 and 189) all finished 6-0 on the weekend.

North Medford failed to advance to the 6A quarterfinals but registered at least one big victory with a 31-28 decision over 10th-ranked Hillsboro — an eventual semifinalist — in the pool rounds.

In Friday's other pool round action, Oregon City topped North Medford 40-27 but the Black Tornado rebounded with a 30-25 win over Centennial. McNary defeated North Medford 40-30 on Saturday.

Cody Wedman went 3-1 on the weekend and Branden Todd, who wrestled in the final match of every dual, earned key victories over Hillsboro and Centennial.

Also in 6A competition Friday, Grants Pass scored a 44-33 win over McMinnville before falling in two tough matches to Clackamas (41-31) and Redmond (36-33).

In the 4A ranks, Phoenix suffered a 33-21 loss to Estacada, beat North Bend 44-33 and was overpowered by Sweet Home 60-10.

Skiing

ASHLAND GIRLS WIN SLALOMS — At Mt. Ashland, North Medford's Rylee Houck won the giant slalom on Friday and Ashland's Jasmine Terry-Shindelman placed first in the slalom Saturday during a Southern Oregon Leaguer competition.

The Ashland girls captured the team victories in each event, followed by Crater and Klamath Union. The Pelican boys won both events, with Ashland second and St. Mary's third.
