Dayton routs Illinois Valley in quarters

NORTH BEND — Illinois Valley kept it close for a quarter, but second-ranked Dayton erupted in the middle two periods and routed the No. 8 Cougars in the Class 3A state quarterfinals, 80-48, at North Bend High.

Dayton (23-6) outscored the No. 2 seed from the Southern Cascade Hybrid 49-25 in the second and third quarters to win going away.

Illinois Valley (20-4) drops into a consolation-round semifinal game at 10:45 a.m. today against Santiam Christian at Marshfield High in Coos Bay. The Eagles (20-7) fell to Sheridan, 39-33.

The Pirates outscored Illinois Valley 17-4 in the first four minutes of the second to establish control, then scored the final six points for a 38-20 halftime lead.

Roger Hults had 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals for Illinois Valley. Fred Hults scored 13 and Tyler Robbins 10.

Dayton got 23 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots from 6-foot-10 junior post Maika Ostling.

The Pirates did damage from the outside as well, making 8 of 16 3-pointers.
