Panthers done in by errors at N. Eugene
EUGENE — South Medford found itself in a "what-if" quandary Monday afternoon in Eugene, falling prey to a couple pivotal lapses in a 4-2 baseball loss to host North Eugene.
The Panthers led 1-0 through three innings behind a solid pitching performance from junior Nate Namanny before things ultimately fell apart against the Highlanders.
North Eugene scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning when a fly ball that would've been the third out of the inning was dropped in left field. The Highlanders tacked on two more runs in the fifth when a one-out error on a routine ground ball opened the door for Garrett Harpole, who followed with a home run.
Andrew Phillips paced South Medford (3-2) with a pair of doubles, while Namanny struck out three, walked one and allowed five hits and one earned run in five innings.
The Panthers left eight runners in scoring position, stranding runners at second and third with one out on three occasions.
"We just didn't get the key hit when we needed it," said South Medford head coach Ray Smith. "Nate threw more than well enough to win, we just couldn't get a hit to save our lives with runners on."
Phillips stroked a leadoff double in the third, stole third and scored on an overthrow to third base for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers tied the game at 1-all in the top of the fifth after Bryson Lake singled, stole second and scored on a single by Namanny.
