North Medford scores OT victory against Ashland

ASHLAND — North Medford took advantage of an unexpected second opportunity against Ashland in nonconference boys soccer Tuesday at Ashland Middle School.

After surrendering a 2-0 lead in the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Black Tornado prevailed with a 3-2 overtime victory.

North Medford coach Dan Torrey was dejected and actually thought the game was over when the scored was tied 2-2 after 80 minutes.

"We didn't know we were playing overtime since it was a nonconference game," said Torrey. "We were ready to give a cheer and get out of there. It was cold, wet and miserable."

But North came out strong in overtime and scored in the third minute. Leo Alonso received a diagonal pass from Jesus Solorio and blasted a kick from straight on at the top of the 18-yard box off the near post and into the net.

"It was a brilliant shot just how (Alonso) placed it," said Torrey. "He was able to bend it off the post."

It was the only scoring in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

The Black Tornado (6-2, 3-1 SOH) opened the scoring in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick by Solorio. In the 67th, he slid a through ball to Edgar Lizardo, who finished from 15 yards.

"Edgar snuck in behind the defense and made a nice run," said Torrey.

The Grizzlies (3-5-1) cut their deficit to 2-1 three minutes later when Josue Leal got a pass from Diego Harrison and boomed in a shot from 17 yards. Zahara Moyers-Cullumbine converted the equalizer when his free kick from 30 yards bounced and slipped into the net.

GRANTS PASS 5, CRATER 1 — At Grants Pass, Moges Dinkins scored twice and Dillon Witham had a goal and two assists for Grants Pass.

Zach Williams and Matt Solar joined Dinkins with first-half goals to give the Cavemen (7-2, 3-2 SOH) a 3-0 halftime lead.

Crater's Norberto Estrada scored in the 47th minute off a Kyle Staney assist, then Dinkins and Witham tallied.

Trenton Anderson had two assists and Casey Zottola another for GP.

The Comets are 0-8 and 0-5.

ROSEBURG 6, EAGLE POINT 1 — At Eagle Point, Zach Campbell scored twice in the second half to lead Roseburg in the nonconference match.

The Indians (4-4) led 1-0 at halftime against the Eagles (0-6-1).

The Eagles' goal came from Jose Lopez in the 53rd minute on a corner kick from Jonathan Sandoval.

KLAMATH UNION 4, NORTH VALLEY 2 — At Klamath Falls, North Valley gave up two own goals to start the scoring and couldn't make it up in the Skyline match.

Jose Meza scored in the 26th minute to make it 3-0 KU, and Thomas Lund added its other goal.

The Knights (1-4-1, 0-3 Sky) got penalty kick goals from Manuel Miramontes and Hector Garcia.
