South Medford stays perfect, races past Westview

PORTLAND — Barnstorming the state in an effort to compete against as much top-flight competition as possible, South Medford's girls basketball team improved to a perfect 2-0 on Friday with an impressive 87-55 triumph over host Westview.

The Panthers drilled 11 3-pointers and ramped up their defensive pressure to race past the Wildcats, who feature highly touted 6-foot-1 sophomore Jaime Nared.

South Medford junior Kylie Towry connected on four 3-pointers and freshman Andee Ritter made five shots from beyond the arc as each totaled 21 points to lead the charge.

Senior post Tess Picknell added 15 points and 10 rebounds, junior point guard Yaremi Mejia had eight points, 12 assists and seven rebounds and sophomore Ashley Bolston added nine points, six steals and five assists in a balanced effort by South.

The Panthers outscored Westview 28-18 in the second quarter to take a 46-31 lead into halftime.

"We really turned up the pressure and got a lot of transition buckets," said Panthers coach Tom Cole. "We were just running on everything. It was like a track meet and you could see they were really tired by the second quarter. We just kept the gas up and kept running and running."

How much gas is left in the tank will be a question for the Panthers, who play their third road game in three days at 11 a.m. today against defending Class 6A champion Jesuit.

Nared finished with 16 points while junior Delanie Parry added 18 for Westview (0-1).
