South Medford pins Ashland in road dual

ASHLAND — It was a blink and you'll miss it kind of night Wednesday when South Medford and Ashland met up for nonconference wrestling action at Ashland High.

Half the weight classes were forfeited and only one of the contested matches went the distance in a runaway 64-12 triumph by the visiting Panthers.

With both teams fielding predominantly young and inexperienced lineups, South Medford essentially had more depth than the host Grizzlies on Wednesday. Ashland forfeited five weight classes, received a forfeit in another and there was a double forfeit at 120 pounds.

In the seven contested matches, the Panthers recorded five falls — the longest taking 3 minutes, 42 seconds — and received a 16-7 major decision at 182 pounds from Logan Jones.

"It's nice wrestling an opponent that has basically the same experience level as us," said South Medford head coach Dave Alonzo. "I think most all the guys actually wrestling tonight for us were mostly freshmen and sophomores and I think most of the guys for them were mostly freshmen and sophomores."

Alex Hathaway continued his strong start to the season for the Panthers, registering a pin of Cody Eiesenberg in 1:45 at 220, to highlight the effort for his team. Hathaway went 4-1 during last Friday's Phoenix Tournament and now stands 5-1.
