Mautz guides Black Tornado past Bend

Derek Mautz had the green light to fire away on Friday and his North Medford basketball teammates made it a point to feed him the ball as much as possible.

Mautz was 6-for-7 from 3-point range, scoring a game-high 24 points, as the Black Tornado overwhelmed Bend 76-35 at North Medford High School.

"He's such an unselfish kid and he could be more selfish (if he wanted), but he does what he does," said North coach Scott Plankenhorn of Mautz. "But when he's wide open, he's always making them.

"We'd get penetration and kick it out to Derek. It was a nice job by the whole team to get him shots."

Mautz, a senior guard, was the beneficiary of a lot of dribble penetration by North Medford (2-0), which as a team made half of its shots, going 30-for-60 from the field and 11-for-22 from beyond the arc.

North's defense also was relentless, allowing only five points by Bend in the final period.

"I thought our defensive intensity was solid all night long," said Plankenhorn. "Even the guys off the bench kept the intensity up. We didn't lose any of it when they came in. We were really excited about that."

North Medford forced 25 turnovers while committing just 13 itself. It held the Lava Bears to an 0-for-9 showing from the field in the second quarter and yielded just one field goal in the fourth. Bend was 5-for-26 from the field in the second half and 1-for-12 from 3-point range for the game.

Chris Faust gave North Medford 11 points and eight rebounds, with Brandon Deberry adding eight points and seven boards. Oshea Bailey and Trey Garfas each dished out four assists and Jordan Browne-Moore had four steals.

Bend's Hayden Crook had 14 points and J.C. Grim added 11.
