Eagle Point edges Crater for mat crown
Eagle Point edged longtime wrestling rival Crater for the championship of the Rogue Valley Invitational Saturday at North Medford High.
Crater crowned more champions, with five, than the Eagles' three, but Eagle Point's depth won out.
Eagle Point wrapped up the championship with a victory at heavyweight by Manny Valdovinos, but it was the team's work through all the weights and placing matches that did the trick, said coach Kacey McNulty.
The Eagles scored 212 points to Crater's 209. North Medford was third with 180 and Phoenix fourth with 1151/2.
"On the back side, we did pretty well," said McNulty. "We had quite a few placers on the back side who didn't make it to the finals. We had six in the finals and three of them won. It was a close one. It came down to our heavyweight winning to win the tournament."
Valdovinos edged Marlon Campos of North Medford, 5-3.
"He had a strong performance," said McNulty. "He didn't pin his guy in the finals. He (Campos) is a big, physical kid and Manny was able to control the match. There was not a point in the match where I felt he was in big jeopardy."
Eagle Point's other winners were Orlando De La Cruz, at 120 pounds, and Trevor Olsen, who went to overtime before pinning Tony Frank of Lakeview in 6:49.
Runners-up for EP were Zac Mooney (113), Aaron Lorenz (126) and Alejandro Valle (220).
Crater got titles from Truman Winningham (132), Tyler Montague (138), Chase Mackey (160), Chance Fahndrich (182) and Derek Turituri (220). It was Fahndrich's fourth tournament title this season.
"Overall, we wrestled pretty good," said Comets coach Greg Haga. "It was a tight battle with Eagle Point. We just missed a few matches here and there, so it was a good day for us."
Other local champions were North Medford's Austin Mitchell (106) and Reid Shipley (170), Rogue River's Aaron Longtain (126) and Phoenix's Eleazar Deluca (145).
The tournament's outstanding wrestlers were Longtain at the lower weights and Lakeview's Jay Lynse (152) at the upper weights.
