No. 1 Phoenix bolts past Henley

PHOENIX — Top-ranked Phoenix had its track shoes on in the second quarter and pulled away from Henley for a 69-41 Skyline Conference boys basketball victory Tuesday.

The Pirates (11-2, 2-0 Sky) scored 27 second-quarter points to build a 41-19 halftime lead.

"We just kept our transition going so we could get them out of their half-court defense," said Phoenix coach Glenn Johannes, "and it worked in our favor. They're pretty good in their half-court set."

The win sets up a showdown with No. 6-ranked North Valley at 8 p.m. in Merlin on Friday. The two met in a holiday tournament and Phoenix triumphed, 64-48.

Against Henley, Duane Dungannon scored 19 points and Alex Young had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Pirates slowed it down in the second half.

"We wanted to make sure we took care of the ball," said Johannes. "We weren't trying to match the same point total. We were more worried about working for high-percentage shots in our half-court offense, and we were able to do that."

Tyson Morris added 10 points for the Pirates, and Luke Brown grabbed eight rebounds.
