Eagles, Comets make strides at Oregon Classic
REDMOND — Match experience outweighed overall results for the local wrestling contingent competing in the two-day Oregon Classic at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds.
Eagle Point's Aaron Lorenz and Trevor Olsen wrapped up the tournament on Saturday by completing undefeated runs at their respective weight classes. Lorenz, a 120-pounder, and Olsen, who wrestles at 195, each went 5-0 for the Class 5A Eagles.
"They just pushed themselves hard and were aggressive and attacked people and looked for pins when they could get them," said EP head coach Kacey McNulty of seniors. "They weren't intimidated and they just wrestled well. They're both wrestling really well at this point so I'm pleased with them."
The Eagles found themselves against stiff competition, going 2-1 in duals on Friday and 1-1 on Saturday. Eagle Point opened with a 46-17 thrashing of Marshfield before suffering a 42-25 loss to top-ranked Hermiston. The Eagles regrouped with a 58-22 win over Crescent Valley but managed to win only three matches in a 50-12 rout by No. 2 Dallas in the quarterfinals. They wrapped up with a 42-32 win over Churchill.
"It was good for our kids, I guess," said McNulty. "We know where we need to work now. It was tough competition and the kids performed well at points and at other times they kinda floundered. There was a lot of talent there and I think it was a good experience for our kids. I'm positive they'll be motivated by it."
At the 6A level, Crater opened the tourney with an impressive 42-32 win over Newberg but then fell 47-16 to David Douglas. The Comets routed Lake Oswego 62-18 to head into Saturday on a positive note, but lost 53-15 to Roseburg in the quarterfinals and 39-33 to Barlow to bow out of contention.
"It was a good, strong outing for us," said Crater head coach Greg Haga. "Some of our guys wrestled great one dual meet and other kids wrestled great in other dual meets."
Nate Walters pulled out a last-second victory against Barlow despite an injured toe to highlight Day 2 action, with Dillon Ulrey also giving a challenge to a highly ranked Barlow wrestler before falling one-point short.
North Medford struggled with three losses to open the tournament on Friday. The Black Tornado lost 47-18 to Hillsboro, 58-7 to Redmond and 39-32 to West Linn. That string continued with a 42-36 loss to Thurston on Saturday before North capped its weekend with a 39-24 win over Clackamas.
In 4A action, Phoenix dropped three of its matches on Friday as well, falling 57-19 to Cascade, 42-42 by criteria against North Marion and 54-21 to Scappoose. The Pirates, however, scored a 51-13 win over McLoughlin. On Saturday, Phoenix beat Douglas 54-36.
Illinois Valley opened 3A action with wins over Sheridan (69-24) and Grant Union (66-12) before coming up just short of Burns in a 37-36 thriller on Friday. The Cougars scored a 42-36 win in the quarterfinals Saturday against Dayton but lost 46-21 to Glide in the semifinals. In the third-place final, Illinois Valley beat Riverside 42-36.
Roseburg beat Redmond 53-10 for the 6A crown, while Dallas topped Hermiston 34-25 for the 5A title. Henley won in 4A with a 45-23 triumph over Sweet Home, with Glide edging Willamina 42-30 in 3A and Culver topping Gold Beach 58-21 in the 2A finals.
