St. Mary's girls pull upset of Cascade Christian

Emily Alvarez turned in 16 points, seven assists, four steals and two blocks to help fuel St. Mary's to a 63-53 upset victory over Cascade Christian in Southern Cascade Hybrid play at St. Mary's High on Friday night.

The win keeps the Crusaders tied for second place in the league standings with Rogue River, which beat Illinois Valley 57-22 on Friday. Both teams have one conference contest remaining.

"(The win) is huge," St. Mary's head coach David Alexander said. "If we would have lost that game we could have kissed any playoff hopes goodbye. We were kind of looking at the future and the future looked really bleak where we realized we might not make it out of our own league."

Alex DeBoer turned in a season-high 12 points, six rebounds and three steals, Rose Alvarez had nine points and Emily Alvarez — a 5-foot-2 sophomore guard — knocked down four 3-pointers for St. Mary's (15-6, 4-3 SCH), which handed Cascade Christian (14-9, 5-1) its first league defeat.

Elise Vasey added six rebounds for the Crusaders, who earned a one-point advantage at halftime after Emily Alvarez drained a triple with two seconds to play.

Katie Aguilar turned in 15 points and 10 rebounds, Kelsey Cochran had 11 points and Meghan Higday added seven points and 13 rebounds for the Challengers, who trailed by two entering the final period. A turnaround jumper just outside the key by DeBoer put the home team ahead by eight with about three minutes to go.

St. Mary's won despite going 6-of-19 at the free-throw line, including 3-of-12 in the fourth.
