Rogue River's Worthington blanks St. Mary's
Cody Worthington tossed a two-hit shutout as Rogue River rolled to an 8-0 victory over St. Mary's in Southern Cascade Hybrid baseball at Meese Field Tuesday.
The Chieftain senior pitcher struck out four and didn't walk a batter but hit two.
"(Worthington) kept the ball in the zone," said St. Mary's coach Bud Rostel. "We just hit the ball right at people all day long. It was just one of those games."
Rogue River (6-12, 4-6 SCH) broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the third inning. In the frame, the Chieftains received RBI singles from Michael Freitas, Worthington and Garrett Carpenter and a run-scoring squeeze bunt by Aaron Longtain.
Dylan Gomez's two-run double highlighted a three-run outburst in the fifth.
Freshman Matt Johnson's first hit of the season — a one-out single in the third — was the Crusaders' first hit off Worthington. Danny Leavens opened the fifth with a double for the other St. Mary's hit.
Gomez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to pace the Chieftains' attack. Freitas and Carpenter each added two hits and one RBI.
"We're a young team," said Rostel. "It's a growing experience. We just have to learn how to battle through adversity."
The Crusaders (5-12, 2-8) complete the season with a home doubleheader Friday against Cascade Christian.
