Crater, North fare well at Sierra Nevada
RENO — Southern Oregon wrestling was represented well in the 81-team Sierra Nevada Classic on Friday at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
Crater grabbed fifth place with 135 points and North Medford placed sixth, scoring 132. Henley claimed the team title with 176 while crowning three individuals as champions.
North Medford's Austin Mitchell was runner-up to No. 2 seed Nico Colunga of Oakdale High (Oakdale, Calif.) in the 106-pound class. Colunga earned a 4-0 decision in the championship match.
Although Mitchell finished second, his road to reach the championship match was as tough as any in the event. Unseeded, Mitchell pinned top seed Dorian Sapien of Boise High (Boise, Idaho) in 1 minute, 47 seconds.
"It really got us going team-wise," said North Medford coach Nolan Harris on Mitchell's upset win. "We weren't sure if we would be able to hang onto a spot in the top 10. He had a hard road and did a good job."
Reid Shipley of the Black Tornado also fell in the championship match at 170. He was defeated by Central Catholic's Ray Lomas in a 3-2 decision in double overtime.
The Comets had three competitors reach the semifinals. Third-seeded Derrick Turituri fell in his semifinal match at 285 to No. 2 seed Hildelv Manzur of Palma High (Salinas, Calif.) in a 9-3 decision.
At 126, Crater's No. 2 seed, Morgan Walters, dropped a 6-0 decision to James DeLeon of McQueen High (Reno), while teammate Dillon Ulrey was upended at 138 in a 16-6 major decision by Palma's Alex Garcia.
Casey Coulter of Grants Pass was runner-up to champion Tyler Scott of Henley, who claimed a 6-4 decision at 113 pounds.
