Mitchell, Comets ease past Panthers

Crater concocted a big third inning and defeated host South Medford in Southern Oregon Hybrid softball Tuesday, 11-6.

The Comets (6-12, 2-8 SOH) scored six runs in the third for an 8-1 lead.

Malorie Mitchell, who began the third with a single and would later score on Alex Sheperd's sacrifice fly, led Crater hitters. She was 3-for-5 and drove in two runs. She also had an RBI single late in the third.

Marilyn Kennedy, who singled, and Brittany Snyder also had RBIs in the inning. The Comets had four hits in the third and were helped by a walk, a hit batter and an error.

Tia Garrett had a big day for South Medford (4-16, 1-7). She rapped three doubles in four at-bats, drove in two and scored once.

The two teams combined for 11 errors.

NORTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — Maryssa Becker tossed a no-hitter at home to outduel Grants Pass' Amy Robinson and North Medford stretched its winning streak to 10 games and remained unbeaten in the SOH.

Becker (9-1) struck out 13, walked two, hit one batter and lowered her earned run average to 0.65.

North Medford (16-1, 7-0 SOH) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth inning. Alexis Barkwell and Keisha Williams singled to open the frame. After moving to second and third on Michelle Draper's sacrifice bunt, Grace Jovanovic squeezed home Barkwell. When Robinson tried to throw out Jovanovic going to second base on the play, Williams came around to score.

North got its final run on a two-out RBI single by Maddie Gates.

Joci Ellis went 3-for-3 to pace the Black Tornado's 10-hit attack. Barkwell and Jovanovic added two hits each.

Grants Pass fell to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in SOH play.

PHOENIX 6, MAZAMA 0 — At Talent, Amanda Skaff hit a two-run home run — her seventh of the year — and Meranda Zanni tossed a one-hitter in the Skyline game for Phoenix at Hagler-James Field.

Zanni, who hit a two-run triple during the Pirates' five-run fifth, recorded five strikeouts and two walks. Skaff followed with her homer.

Delanie Tally, who was 2-for-3 with two runs, opened the bottom of the first with a triple for Phoenix (12-4, 3-2 Sky). Skaff drove her in.

Henley dropped to 12-4 and 4-1.

HENLEY 22, NORTH VALLEY 9, 5 inn. — At Klamath Falls, Henley capitalized on seven errors, four walks and four hit batters.

Nine of the Hornets' runs were unearned.

For North Valley (9-10, 2-4 Sky), Abi Kite collected two hits and two RBIs and Kenzie Schmoll added two hits and one RBI.

Madigan Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs and Rebekah Ratcliff was hit by four pitches and finished 1-for-1 for the Challengers (6-11, 1-2 SCH).

Winning pitcher Katelyn Smith struck out seven.

Sarah Perkins went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Carolanne Whittaker 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Rogue River (10-5, 5-0 SCH).

Hope Wolterman added two hits and two RBIs and Rebecca Emerson two hits against Illinois Valley (0-14).
