Grants Pass catches North Medford for second

Grants Pass overtook North Medford on the final night of the Southern Oregon Hybrid volleyball season, forcing a tie for second place between the two teams.

The Cavers' 25-19, 13-25, 25-16, 25-20 triumph moved them to 5-3 in league, the same as North Medford. Roseburg completed the SOH season with an 8-0 record.

The top three teams avoid the play-in round and advance into the 32-team state bracket. Play begins next Wednesday.

North Medford won the second set handily, but momentum didn't carry over.

"Volleyball is a game of mistakes," said Black Tornado coach Erika Wright. "The team that makes the most mistakes typically is the team that loses. That held true. They have seven or eight seniors. They're volleyball savvy and have some girls with really live arms."

Senior middle Elle Bixler had 12 kills for North. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Carter had 15 digs, eight kills and three aces. Senior outside Keisha Williams turned in four kills, three aces and 10 digs.

SOUTH MEDFORD 3, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Eagle Point, South Medford was paced by kill leaders Brittany Miller, Megan Funderburk and Nicole Bell in a 26-24, 26-24, 25-18 nonconference victory.

Kelsey Bartlett also chipped in 22 assists, one ace and nine digs for the Panthers (7-13). Eagle Point dropped to 1-17.

ROSEBURG 3, ASHLAND 0 — At Ashland, Roseburg won the nonconference match, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.

Hannah Borgerson, a senior outside hitter, had 17 digs and three kills for the Grizzliles (6-14), and Jordan Tilley, a junior setter, finished with 19 assists, four kills and two blocks. Also for Ashland, Hope Baldrica had seven kills and Ellie Case five kills and two blocks.

Roseburg (23-3) has won nine of its last 10 matches.

Skyline Conference

HIDDEN VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 0 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley cruised in a matchup the Skyline's top two teams, 25-12, 25-19, 25-15, to complete an unbeaten league season.

Hidden Valley, which hosts North Medford Thursday, is 17-1 and 10-0. Second-place Phoenix is 13-6 and 7-3.

HENLEY 3, NORTH VALLEY 1— At Klamath Falls, North Valley's Haleigh Wagman tied her career high with 24 kills and added 36 digs, but Henley (10-9, 6-4 Sky) pulled out a wild Skyline win, 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 26-24.

Rashelle Garcia tied her season high for assists with 46 for North Valley (6-13, 4-6).

Southern Cascade Hybrid

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — Karlee Britton had seven kills and four aces and Madigan Smith six kills and nine aces in Cascade Christian's 25-10, 25-15, 25-11 SCH win.

Trudy Burns and Ellie Brown added six kills apiece for the Challengers (16-7, 8-0 SCH), who recorded 25 aces. Paige Bruce was strong in the back row against Illinois Valley (3-15, 0-8).

Cascade Christian, the regular-season champion, will host the SCH championship Saturday.

LAKEVIEW 3, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Rogue River, Lakeview rallied after dropping the first set and won the SCH match, 11-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-19.

Senior middle Darby Gibson had 14 kills for the Chieftains (5-8, 3-5 SCH).

ST. MARY'S 3, CHILOQUIN 0 — At Chiloquin, St. Mary's eased to a 25-7, 25-12, 25-20 nonconference win, improving its overall record to 8-12.
