South wins High Desert Classic

KLAMATH FALLS — South Medford brought home four individual championships and also had a second-place finisher to claim the High Desert Classic team title on Saturday.

The Panthers had 10 individual placers to rack up 191 points and best Eagle Point's No. 2 varsity team (170), which had eight placers and four champions, and Klamath Union (155).

Brandon Brooks pocketed one of the biggest victories of the tournament when he earned a 7-5 decision over No. 1 seed Chance Anderson of Hidden Valley in the 170-pound final. Brooks took Anderson down to his back in the early going and led throughout to pull off the upset, his third win of the day.

At 152, South Medford's Gage Graves, the No. 3 seed, beat top-seeded Dalton Alexander of Lakeview 8-1 to claim the title. That big win followed another, as Graves also ousted the No. 2 seed, Noah Sitzer, with a pin in the semifinals in 4:42.

Also for South, Ruben Mendez claimed the 160-pound weight class by pinning Nathan Harlan of Lakeview in 3:50, and Austyn Miles won at 195 when he pinned his junior varsity teammate Hayden Evans in 49 seconds. Evans upset the No. 2 seed, Brandon Wrezinski of Hidden Valley, in the semis with a pin in 3:10.
