Bradfield wins regional title to pace Phoenix

PHOENIX — Phoenix senior Kyle Bradfield won in a nail-biter and teammates Izzy Rubio and Trace Vega placed second to highlight Day 2 for the local contingent at the Class 4A District 3 Regional Championships on Saturday at Phoenix High.

Overall, the Pirates qualified 10 wrestlers to the state tournament next weekend at Portland's Memorial Coliseum and finished second in the team competition to No. 2-ranked Henley, 417.5 to 261. The top four individuals at each weight qualify for the state tournament.

"We had a good day and a good showing," said Phoenix head coach John Farmer, whose Pirates are ranked seventh. "We have five seniors on this team and all five are going to state. I love that they're not leaving anybody whose not coming back next year at home. They're all wrestling in Portland against the best."

Bradfield, seeded second at 145 pounds, scored a 2-1 decision over Henley's Daine Taylor, the No. 1 seed, to avenge last week's loss in the Skyline Conference district finals. Bradfield used a penalty point for a choke hold and an escape to take a 2-0 lead, then was able to fend off Taylor after the Hornet standout earned a quick escape in the third period.

"It was just a really tight match between two kids that battled," said Farmer. "They were pretty evenly matched but when Kyle had to stop him from scoring at the end he was able to keep the kid at bay."

At 170, senior Rubio dropped another close match to Henley's Gary Jantzer in a rematch of last year's state finals. Jantzer went up 2-0 on a first-period takedown but Rubio was able to tie the match entering the third period, where an early escape and a stalemate led to Jantzer's 3-2 triumph.

"It's a match everybody was waiting for because it's intense and it goes back-and-forth," said Farmer. "We're just a hair away."

Vega, a sophomore at 182, lost a 9-1 major decision to Klamath Union's Chase Anderson, who placed third at state last year.

Placing third for Phoenix were Richard Orndorff (120, junior), Mark McCalister (126, sophomore) and William Frazee (170, sophomore). Pirates senior Zeke Flores won a wrestleback to score the No. 4 spot to state at 120, while Cedrius King (126, sophomore), Braden Vega (160, senior), Travis Stainbrook (182, senior) also were fourth.
