Coggins, Challengers deny Eagles, 11-1

Cascade Christian junior pitcher Cody Coggins was in control throughout and the Challengers got an unusual power surge from Cooper Clark en route to an 11-1 baseball victory over Eagle Point in five innings Monday.

Coggins had all three of his hits allowed come in the fourth inning and wound up striking out 10 with one walk in the nonconference game at U.S. Cellular Community Park. The right-hander improved to 2-0.

"He was solid," said Challengers head coach Nate Mayben, whose team is 5-2. "He worked his fastball real well with his changeup and he was able to keep the ball down and then go up when he had to."

Coggins got plenty of support from Clark and Will Weaver, who each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Clark, not known for his power, highlighted the day with a solo home run in the second inning for his first round-tripper of the season.

"He ran into one there," said Mayben. "He'd been showing a little pop in BP this year and I was expecting him to run one out of the yard soon, but you probably won't see a lot more of those."

Eagle Point (0-6) used a leadoff single by Ryan Johnson in the fourth to break up Coggins' no-hit bid, then got one-out singles by Justin Hughes and Jon Wilson to load the bases. Devyn Grady plated Johnson with a sacrifice fly.

ST. MARY'S 10-6, MT. SHASTA 0-7 — At Mt. Shasta, Calif., Joe Hammonds pitched a one-hit shutout in the opener for St. Mary's, but two costly seventh-inning errors in Game 2 forced the Crusaders to settle for a nonconference split.

Hammonds no-hit bid ended with a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth. Hammonds finished with six strikeouts and hit one batter.

Duncan O'Boyle and Joe Johnson each hit two-run singles for St. Mary's (4-6) in the first and second inning, respectively. The game lasted just five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

In Game 2, St. Mary's built a 6-1 lead by the top of the fourth inning but Mt. Shasta got a run in the bottom of the frame and added three more in the fifth.

Mt. Shasta put two runners on base after an error and a hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and another miscue on a well-hit ball to the outfield allowed the tying and winning runs to score.

Spencer McCabe went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in the first inning for St. Mary's. He finished with four RBIs and two runs scored.

NORTH VALLEY 20, CASCASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, 5 inn. — At Merlin, North Valley's eight-run first inning was too much for Cascade Christian to overcome in nonleague action.

The Challengers (0-5) got a quick start with Raleigh Weaver's two-run double in the top of the first inning, but the Knights (4-7) erased it by collecting 10 runs over the next two innings.

Ambur Dechenne had a two-run triple and Mikala Mohr added a two-run double during the Knights' five-run third inning. The contest lasted just five innings by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule.

Emily Allen allowed three hits and struck out six to get the victory, and Cindy Clarke went 2-for-4.
