Comets win two at Easter Classic

FRESNO, Calif. — Crater pitchers Gunnar Asher and Dylan Pearce each were steady on the mound and the Comets used timely hitting to open the 32-team Easter Baseball Classic with a pair of wins Monday.

Asher struck out six, walked one and allowed seven hits to help lead Crater to a 5-2 victory over Sanger High of California, then Pearce took the mound shortly thereafter and stuck out seven with four walks and three hits allowed to upend Clovis East of California, 6-3.

"It's a long drive and the kids traveled well coming down (Sunday)," said Crater head coach Jay Campbell. "They adjusted well to the heat that was in the 90s here and were able to get some clutch hits and good pitching to get off to a good 2-0 start down here."

Taylor Tibbets went a combined 4-for-8 with two runs and two RBIs in the sweep, belting his fifth home run to lead off the seventh inning against Clovis East.

Ty Fox was 2-for-3 with one run and Blake Fahndrich belted a key two-run double in the first inning that helped the fifth-ranked Comets to a 3-0 advantage over Sanger.

The big hit of Game 2 came off Tyler Aplin's bat in the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded. Aplin smacked a two-run single that also resulted in a third run scoring when it was thrown away by the right fielder.
