Panthers pick up first league win

Ryan Carle had the go-ahead RBI groundout in the fifth inning to help lift the South Medford baseball team past Grants Pass, 3-1, in Southern Oregon Hybrid action at Harry & David Field on Wednesday.

It was the Panthers' first league triumph of the year.

Brady Breeze finished 2-for-3 and Caleb Newman earned the win on the mound after allowing seven hits, one earned run and four walks with two strikeouts in five innings.

Grants Pass (3-12, 0-4 SOH) took a 1-0 lead with Hayden Chandler's RBI single that drove in Easton Bents in the top of the first. Bents got on base with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Jimmy Sporer tied things up in the bottom of the inning on a Grants Pass throwing error. He got on with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and then came home after a Breeze single to center field and a Grants Pass misthrow.

The Panthers (10-6, 1-3) took the lead in the fifth when Carle platted Jake Perry, who led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to second by Cole Carder and then moved to third with no one covering.

Sporer was next walked and stole second before Carle's hit. Sporer then scored on a wild pitch.

Drew VanEss was 2-for-4 for the Cavemen.

Justin James earned the save, giving up no hits, no runs and no walks with two strikeouts in two innings.

The contest was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed because of wet grounds at the ballpark.

PHOENIX 1, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Talent, Israel Navarro and Aaron Hutchinson combined for a three-hit shutout and Kyle Botterman came through with a walk-off double as Phoenix won a Skyline Conference thriller at Halger-James Field.

Held in check through six innings, the Pirates (6-9, 3-4 Skyline) finally got on the board with nobody out in the seventh when Botterman laced a 2-2 pitch into the left-center field gap to score Knute Thompson from second. Thompson led off the inning with a walk, then stole second.

Navarro started on the mound and held Klamath Union (4-9-1, 2-5) scoreless through five innings on three hits. He struck out six with three walks. Hutchinson fanned three without a walk over the last two innings and did not give up a hit.

Zach Kentner and Botterman had two hits apiece to lead Phoenix's offense.
