South puts an end to losing skid
South Medford snapped a four-game losing streak behind solid pitching Tuesday from senior Caleb Newman and the type of timely hitting head coach Ray Smith had been seeking in Southern Oregon Hybrid baseball at Harry & David Field.
Newman tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks and the Panthers got two-run singles from Jake Perry and Austin White to topple Roseburg, 6-0, and send the Indians to their third straight loss.
"We did a lot of little things well, which helped us hold them off there," said Smith, whose team improved to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in SOH play.
"A couple kids came through with some big hits when we needed them with runners in scoring position," added Smith, "and I'm proud of the kids to be able to bounce back after a tough loss at Crater (last Saturday). I was wondering how we would respond and we did."
Perry and White each finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Panthers, while Ryan Carle and Cole Carder each added two hits and one run scored.
Layne Westwang was 2-for-3 for Roseburg (8-10, 4-3).
Perry extended his hitting streak to eight games with two outs in the fourth when he singled home White and Eric Wallan, who had come in to play first base after Nate Walker re-aggravated a shoulder injury. Carder and Carle each singled in the fifth to put runners in scoring position, with Carder coming in on a throwing error before Carle and Brady Breeze scored on White's two-out single to right field.
Jimmy Sporer plated Caleb Bell on a sacrifice fly in a sixth inning that saw Roseburg catcher David Irvine make a sensational play by running down Perry for an out at third base after the area had been vacated on a bunt by Bell.
