Tornado, Panthers meet today in baseball
Action heats up in the high school baseball and softball playoffs today, and there's little question where the most electric atmosphere will be.
Crosstown rivals South Medford and North Medford meet in the second round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs at 4:30 p.m. at North Medford High.
North Medford placed second in the Southern Oregon Hybrid and is the No. 2 team in the Oregon School Activities Association power rankings with a 23-4 record. It defeated the Panthers in all three league meetings by an average score of 5-1.
South Medford was the No. 3 team in the league and is 16-10 overall.
North Medford is coming off a 5-3 victory Monday over visiting Oregon City, while South Medford advanced with a 5-4 home triumph over Barlow.
In other baseball games being played locally today, Tigard is at Crater at 4 p.m. in a 6A second-round game, Dallas is at Ashland at 4:30 p.m. in a 5A first-round contest and Rainier plays Cascade Christian at 4 p.m. in a 3A first-round game at U.S. Cellular Community Park, Field 9.
In other baseball playoffs, Hidden Valley is at North Marion at 5 p.m. for a 4A first-round game, and St. Mary's goes to Santiam Christian at 4 p.m. in the first round of the 3A playoffs.
In 6A softball second-round games, top-rated and defending champion North Medford is host to Jesuit at 4:15 p.m., Grants Pass hosts Thurston at 4:30 p.m. and South Medford visits Roseburg at 4:30 p.m.
North Medford got four-hit pitching with 15 strikeouts from Alexis Barkwell in a 6-0 win over Beaverton on Monday.
South Medford had the upset of the tournament when the No. 30-seeded Panthers rode the pitching of freshman Pat Moore to an 11-inning, 5-1 triumph over No. 3-seeded Tualatin.
In first-round softball playoffs, 5A Eagle Point goes to West Albany at 4:30 p.m., 3A Rogue River visits Glide at 4:30 p.m. and 1A Prospect-Butte Falls travels to Vernonia in 1A at 4 p.m.
