Fox's three-hitter carries Crater over Tigard
CENTRAL POINT — Crater got another strong pitching performance, and the top-seeded Comets moved into the Class 6A baseball quarterfinals with a 4-1 victory over Tigard Wednesday at Anhorn Field.
"Pitching is definitely keeping us in ballgames," said Crater coach Jay Campbell, after his team improved to 23-6. "Anytime your pitching is giving up one run a game, you've got a shot in the playoffs."
Senior right-hander Ty Fox did the honors this time, holding the Tigers (15-14) to three hits and striking out 10. He walked two and hit one batter.
The effort came two days after Nolan Bastendorff pitched Crater to a 3-1 victory over Aloha.
"He (Fox) was in command all day," said Campbell. "He was pretty dominant from the very beginning."
On Friday, Crater hosts Sheldon, a team it beat 4-1 in the season opener but ousted the Comets in walk-off fashion during last year's state quarterfinals. The defending champion Irish downed Century 6-1 on Wednesday.
Fox, who improved to 10-1, struck out the first two batters he faced, gave up a single, then got the third out via strikeout. The only other hits he allowed were two singles in the sixth, when Tigard scored its run.
"He had all three pitches working," said Campbell. "He was able to locate his fastball and hit the corners at knee level. He kept it nice and low. He kept the ball down and kept it moving. He was aggressive today. It was a real solid outing."
Fox threw only 86 pitches.
Paul Turner, Tanner Ryerson — who got the scoring started with an RBI single in the second — and Taylor Tibbets each had two hits for the Comets.
Crater added two runs in the fourth after Blake Fahndrich singled, Joey Caballero walked and both moved up on a double steal. Zach Lathrop's sacrifice fly scored Fahndrich, and Ty Plankenhorn singled in Caballero.
In the fifth Tibbets doubled and Dylan Morgan, pinch running for him, scored on a wild pitch.
