Fahndrich powers Crater to win over Knights
CENTRAL POINT — Destiny Fahndrich and top-flight serving set the tone for the Crater volleyball team in its season opener on Tuesday.
The Comets earned a 25-17, 25-16, 25-21 nonleague victory over North Valley at Crater.
Fahndrich, an outside hitter, racked up 10 kills, three aces and 10 digs. She served 13 points as well and made her best run from the service line in the opening game with five straight points which gave the Comets (1-0) an 8-2 lead. She also broke a 20-all tie with the Knights (0-1) in the final game to help Crater pull away.
Senior middle hitter Paige Berriochoa added eight kills, two blocks and five digs for the Comets, and setter Nicole Davis served five points in a row in the second set.
Junior outside hitter Haleigh Wagman posted 10 kills and junior setter Taryn King had 19 assists and a pair of aces for North Valley.
Ambur DeChenne had five of her six kills in the third set for the Knights.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, DOUGLAS 0: Ellie Brown’s seven kills paced host Cascade Christian as it improved to 3-0 on the season. The Challengers won the Yreka, Calif., tournament on Saturday.
Against Douglas, Madigan Smith added five kills, four aces and two blocks, and Katelyn Smith and Paige Bruce each had five kills.
ETNA 3, ST. MARY’S 2: At Etna, Calif., Etna pulled out a 25-22, 11-25, 25-16, 15-25, 15-12 victory in nonleague play.
St. Mary’s was led in its season opener by Claire Hawkins, who had 13 kills, 10 blocks and five aces. Dakota Rothfus added six kills, a block and two aces.
Emily Eccleston was the leading passer, with six perfect passes on serve-receive, and Aessa Catt chipped in four blocks.
ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, PROSPECT 2: At Prospect, Prospect’s Melissa Raines racked up 58 digs but Illinois Valley took the five-set battle, 21-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-18 and 15-12.
Middle hitter Baley Van Wormer added 10 kills for the Cougars (0-1).
ST. MARY’S WINS: Tim McPherson and Marissa Dobry won the boys and girls 5,000-meter races at 27th annual Crusader Invitational at Bear Creek Park.
McPherson won in 17 minutes, 53 seconds, and Dobry in 20:36.
St. Mary's had the only complete team of four schools entered.
