Jensen’s two goals boost Panther girls

Brittany Jensen tallied two goals and helped the South Medford girls soccer team in an early season challenge coach Chris Hollewijn and the Panthers were waiting for.

Sprague, undefeated entering Thursday’s match-up, wasn’t able to get enough scoring opportunities to prevent the Panthers from posting a satisfying, 3-0 victory.

“It was nice to beat a team that’s been winning some games,” said Hollewijn. “I was happy with the way the girls played. They showed tons of effort. The girls dug deep and kept the energy up.”

Montana Logue chalked up the Panthers’ first goal after she collected a loose ball at about the 18-yard mark on the right side of the goal. She drilled a shot to the left of the net 27 minutes in.

Jensen’s goal 11 minutes later gave the Panthers a 2-0 halftime lead. She snuck between a defender and the goalkeeper to tap in the ball into the net on the first hop of a pass from Erin Riley.

Jensen scored again for the Panthers (2-1) in the 49th minute on a pass from Hannah Kappel.

Panthers goalkeeper McKenzie Kapp recorded four saves to preserve the shutout.

“She wasn’t too busy tonight,” said Hollewijn of Kapp. “There weren’t too many attacks. We had most of the play.”

ST. MARY’S 3, KLAMATH UNION 0: At Klamath Falls, Emily Elmore scored a pair of goals and St. Mary’s fast start earned it a nonconference victory.

Elmore’s first goal came in the sixth minute on a pass from Kricket Lyle, and her second was in the 48th minute on Allie Buccino’s assist.

Buccino opened the scoring with goal in the fourth minute on a setup from Lyle.

Viv Juncal turned over goalkeeping duties to Emily Riehlman in the second half and completed the shutout for St. Mary’s (4-0).

COTTAGE GROVE 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1: At Cottage Grove, Kiana Hemenway staked the Lions to a 2-0 halftime lead and Cascade Christian was unable to overcome it in the nonconference game.

The Challengers got a goal from Erika Worthington in the 44th minute to cut it to 2-1. She took a pass from Alex Torano and slid a shot into the lower right corner from about 14 yards out. Cottage Grove tallied 17 minutes later.

Cheyanne Auchard did a nice job controlling the midfield for Cascade Christian.

ROGUE RIVER 10, DOUGLAS 0: At Rogue River, Annie Teehan scored four goals as Rogue River took care of nonconference foe Douglas.

Sequoia Pofton and Ireena Stiefb both found the back of the net twice for the Chieftains (2-0), and Larissa Hamilton added one goal and an assist.

Starting goalkeeper Sam Mantlo picked up three saves for the Chieftains.

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 2, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: At Brookings, Illinois Valley had a difficult time handling Brookings-Harbor’s speed and fell prey in the nonleague bout.

The Cougars (0-2) received outstanding defensive play from stopper Lily Cusumano.
