Cascade Christian hires two coaches
Tim Pflug has been hired as the Cascade Christian girls basketball coach and Suzanne Ray has taken over as the Challengers’ cross country coach.
Pflug and Ray replace Marvin Denman and Steve Williston, respectively.
Pflug brings 15 years of coaching experience to Cascade Christian, beginning in 1988 as the Southern Oregon University assistant men’s coach. He became SOU’s women’s coach in 1990.
Pflug began a 10-year term as St. Mary’s boys basketball coach in 1995. He guided the Crusaders to three league titles and was honored with four coach-of-the-year awards. Pflug’s teams advanced to the Class 2A state tournament in six of his eight years and had two third-place finishes.
He later led the Crusader girls to a pair of league championships during a three-season stint that started in 2007. During that stretch, Pflug was twice named conference coach of the year.
Pflug also coached the St. Mary’s football team and was a football assistant at SOU.
“We are very excited about Tim Pflug joining the Cascade Christian Challengers coaching family,” Cascade Christian athletic director Dave Fennell said in a press release. “We believe that he will develop this program into a state championship contender.”
The Cascade Christian girls went 13-11 overall and finished third in the Southern Cascade League last winter.
Ray is beginning her 14th year of teaching at Cascade Christian and has had much success racing locally. She is the only four-time winner of the Britt Woods Firehouse Run and has done well in long-distance runs.
The Cascade Christian boys cross country team finished fifth and the girls ninth at the Class 3A/2A/1A state championships last year. Returning senior Tim McPherson was seventh at state with a time of 16:41.
