Sheldon hands North Medford straight-set defeat
North Medford received improved offensive efforts from Emily Carter and Ashley Ripplinger but visiting Sheldon swept the Black Tornado, 25-15, 25-14, 25-20, in Southwest Conference volleyball Tuesday at the North gym
Carter, a junior outside, posted 10 kills and six digs, while Ripplinger, a sophomore outside hitter, contributed five kills and 11 digs.
“(Carter and Ripplinger) compete and are important players to our program,” said North Medford coach Erika Wright. “Tonight they made less errors attacking wise than in the last three matches.”
The Black Tornado (1-3, 1-3 SWC) had difficulty on serve receive and the Irish front line attacked effectively.
The Irish improved to 2-1 in the SWC and are 3-4 overall.
“We don’t have any nights off in this conference,” said Wright. “We have to be at the top of our game. We’re learning the hard way.”
North Medford will host the 16-team Rogue Valley Classic on Saturday.
ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: At Roseburg, freshman outside hitter Alyssa Vaughn paced the South Medford front line in a 25-9, 25-15, 25-9 SWC loss.
Vaughn had six kills and 10 digs and junior middle blocker Jasmin Falls provided five kills and five blocks.
Libero Natalie Castellano came up with 14 digs for the winless Panthers (0-3, 0-3 SWC).
SOUTH EUGENE 3, GRANTS PASS 1: At Eugene, South Eugene won the Southwest Conference opener, 25-17, 25-13, 33-35, 27-25.
Danielle Taylor and Amy Robinson had 13 kills apiece for Grants Pass. Elliott Cook turned in eight kills, Halee Rose 18 digs and Emily Gill 23 assists for the Cavers (3-4, 1-2 SWC).
The Axemen improved to 5-2 overall, 3-1 in league.
CRATER 3, NORTH VALLEY 0: At Merlin, Crater improved to 7-0 with the 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 nonleague win.
Kelsey Strouse had 13 hits, nine digs and four aces and Paige Berriochoa 10 kills and 16 digs for the Comets. Crater’s Nicole Davis added 33 assists and four aces.
For North Valley (5-3), Haleigh Wagman recorded six kills and 11 digs, Baileigh Feetham six kills and two blocks and Taryn King 19 assists.
ASHLAND 3, HENLEY 0: At Ashland, Ashland bounced back from its first two-match losing streak of the season with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-19 nonleague win at Mountain Avenue Gym.
Hope Baldrica had 10 kills and six blocks, Jordan Tilley 25 assists, nine kills and two aces and Myla Norvell 22 digs and an ace for the Grizzlies (6-2).
Also for Ashland, Grace Lenthe had nine kills and three aces.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, Cascade Christian triumphed 25-10, 25-18, 25-23.
Allison Winter, Ellie Brown and Nicole Morse had six kills apiece, and Alyssa Brown recorded 26 assists for the Challengers (8-2).
Eagle Point dropped to 1-6.
PHOENIX 3, ST. MARY’S 0: Phoenix got 12 kills and three aces from Olivia Young and ran its record to 6-2 in the nonconference match at St. Mary’s, winning 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.
Sydney Amundsen added 11 kills for the Pirates, while Karlie Richardson amassed 34 assists.
For the Crusaders (3-7), Claire Hawkins went 23-for-24 at the service line with five kills to go along with six blocks, and Madison Christensen was 9-for-10 serving with four kills.
SOUTH UMPQUA 3, ROGUE RIVER 2: At Tri City, South Umpqua rallied to win the nonleague match, 25-22, 25-17, 15-25, 8-25, 10-15.
Kortney Moore had seven kills, four digs and two blocks, Anjelica Pamplona four kills, four digs and three blocks, Heather Myer seven digs and five aces and Natalie Watkins 12 assists for Rogue River (2-4).
BUTTE FALLS 3, PROSPECT 0: At Prospect, undefeated Butte Falls used hot serving to win the Mountain Valley League match, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15.
The Loggers improved to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in league play. Prospect dropped to 2-4, 1-3.
