North Medford pitches SWC shutout

The North Medford boys soccer team dominated in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over Thurston in Southwest Conference action at Hoffbuhr Field on Saturday.

The Black Tornado (3-2, 1-1 SWC) turned in all of its points in the opening 40 minutes.

Carter Ehlers’ powerful corner kick in the 12th minute caused an own goal when the ball went off a Colt player.

Six minutes later, Jase Artale headed in a goal off a skilled pass from Ehlers.

Manny Mejia finished off the scoring with a goal in the 24th minute against Thurston (1-4-1, 0-2). He dribbled around three defenders before sending it in with his left foot.

Eric Benitez and Matt Van Horn combined for the shutout in-goal, with Danny Zamores and David Eisenhauer turning in strong defensive efforts in front of them.

SOUTH EUGENE 1, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: Collin ChubbFertal’s goal on a corner kick in the 55th minute held up for South Eugene in Southwest Conference action.

Goalkeeper Caleb Rayburn and forward/midfielder Kyle Owings turned in strong performances for South Medford (3-2, 1-1 SWC).

The Axemen improved to 4-0-2 overall, 1-1 in league.

SHELDON 4, GRANTS PASS 0: At Eugene, Sheldon cruised in Southwest Conference action.

The Irish improved to 3-1-1 overall, 2-0 in league play. The Cavemen dropped to 4-2, 1-1 in conference.

ASHLAND 2, HIDDEN VALLEY 0: At Murphy, Graycen Kennedy chipped in a goal after collecting the ball off a deflected direct kick by teammate David Lehrburg to cement Ashland’s nonconference win over host Hidden Valley.

Bryce Rollins got the Grizzlies (2-3) rolling after turning a steal into a score in the 36th minute.

Recording the shutout for the Grizzlies was goalkeeper Tejas Leier-Heyden with six saves.

Mustangs keeper Seth Trader made a pair of impressive one-on-one stops against both Rollins and Kennedy.

MARIST 7, CRATER 1: At Central Point, Josiah Quijano scored from 30 yards out in the 65th minute for Crater in Midwestern League action at Dutch Meyer Field.

The Comets (1-4, 0-1 MWL), who were missing five starters, trailed 4-0 at halftime.

NORTH VALLEY 3, BROOKINGS 1: At Brookings, Trinidad Florez recorded a hat trick with goals in the sixth, 31st and 64th minutes for North Valley in nonleague action.

Brandon Rodgers and the Joseph Gurzi had assists for the Knights (2-2), who led 2-0 at halftime.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, CANYONVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 1: At Canyonville, Kallen Rechberg converted a pair of penalty kicks and had an assist, Travis Cave had a goal and an assist and Jesse Fretz scored for Cascade Christian during District 5 action.

Jeremie Munyakazi netted a goal in the 71st minute on a PK against the Challengers (4-1, 1-0 Dist. 5).
