North Medford pushes Axemen to five sets

EUGENE — The North Medford volleyball team pushed South Eugene to five sets before falling short in Southwest Conference action on Tuesday.

The Axemen (4-4, 3-1 SWC) prevailed, 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 25-12, 15-5.

Junior outside hitter Emily Carter erupted for 22 kills and nine digs, leading the way for a North squad that led 2-1 in the match before losing some steam.

Adriane McLemore had six kills, Jen Cavalier five kills, Ryan Frings five aces and 12 digs and Ashley Ripplinger 17 digs and two aces for the Black Tornado (4-5, 1-5).

GRANTS PASS 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 2: South Medford stormed back from two games down but serving errors proved costly in the decisive fifth set as Grants Pass posted a 25-7, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12 victory at the Panthers gym.

South Medford (0-7, 0-5 SWC) led 10-6 in the fifth set but four straight service errors proved costly.

Nicole Bell, a junior outside, led the Panthers with 13 digs, 12 kills and three aces and freshman middle Chanel Groom smacked 11 kills and had three blocks.

Jasmin Falls, a South junior middle, contributed eight kills and five blocks, while junior setter Kelsey Bartlett passed out 25 assists and Alyssa Vaughn had a team-high 15 digs.

ASHLAND 3, CRATER 2: At Ashland, Ashland stormed back from a 2-1 set deficit to edge Crater in Midwestern League play.

The Grizzlies rallied for a 25-27, 25-22, 12-25, 25-18, 15-13 victory.

The win improved the first-place Grizzlies (8-3 overall) to 4-1 in the MWL, while Crater fell to 9-2 and 3-1.

Jordan Tilley had 33 assists, six kills and six aces, Hope Baldrica 13 kills and eight blocks and Grace Lenthe 10 kills and one ace for the Grizzlies.

Destiny Fahndrich and Paige Berriochoa had 15 kills and 10 digs each for Crater. Lainey Jensen recorded 15 digs and three aces and Kelsey Strouse 11 kills and 14 digs for the Comets.

PHOENIX 3, MAZAMA 0: At Phoenix, Phoenix used 15 aces and effective passing to post a 25-20, 25-15, 25-6 Skyline victory.

Senior middle Adriana Mereida-Ford paced the Pirates’ (7-2, 2-0 Sky) front line with 10 kills, while Olivia Young pounded seven and Sydney Amundsen added six.

Setter Karlie Richardson passed out 20 assists and led the Pirates with five aces, while Lyzett Gutierrez, a junior libero, came up with 11 digs.

NORTH VALLEY 3, KLAMATH UNION 0: At Merlin, passing and defense keyed North Valley in the Skyline win, 25-8, 25-11, 25-18.

Libero Autumn Westerman led the Knights’ defense with 22 digs and setter Taryn King had 25 assists and five aces.

Haleigh Wagman, a junior outside, posted her ninth double-double in 10 matches with 18 kills and 10 digs for North Valley (6-4, 1-1 Sky).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: Cascade Christian cruised in Southern Cascade League action, 25-11, 25-15, 25-17.

Madigan Smith recorded 10 kills and Ellie Brown seven kills and two blocks for the Challengers (10-3, 2-0 SCL).

Alyssa Brown had 23 assists and Allison Winter six aces against Illinois Valley (3-6, 0-2).

ROGUE RIVER 3, ST. MARY’S 2: Rogue River outlasted host St. Mary’s, 25-27, 26-24, 25-22, 13-25, 15-12.

Courtney Sakraida paced the Chieftains with 15 digs and Angelica Pamplona added 13.

Kortney Moore also had 13 digs for the Chieftains to go with nine kills and three blocks while Skye Downhill added seven blocks, six digs and four kills.

For the Crusaders, Claire Hawkins had 10 kills and eight blocks, MacKenzie Addington seven aces and Aessa Catt six aces.

TRIAD 3, PROSPECT 0: At Klamath Falls, Triad cruised in Mountain Valley League action, 25-17, 25-8, 25-20.

Prospect dropped to 2-6 overall, 1-5 in league action.
