Local runners place high at Oxford Classic

BEND — Cascade Christian’s Tim McPherson, Phoenix’s Danielle Jantzer and North Medford’s Connor Covey all turned in top-10 finishes in their respective 5,000-meter races at the Oxford Classic cross country meet on Friday.

McPherson finished in 16 minutes, 57.1 seconds to take 10th out of 49 runners in the boys varsity elite race. Nigel Leonis placed 26th (17:52.5) for Phoenix’s fastest finish in the same race. Summit won the team title with 28 points, with the Pirates finishing last (164) out of seven teams.

In the girls varsity elite run, Jantzer took seventh (19:51.4) out of 59. Nevina De Luca was 15th (20:35.2) for the Pirates, who were seventh (148) out of nine teams. Summit won (30).

In the boys regular varsity race, Covey was fifth out of 131 runners (17:36.3). The Black Tornado placed seventh (226) out of 20 teams, with Summit (33) winning.

Phoenix’s Thomas Skaff took 24th (18:37).

Boys Soccer

ASHLAND 2, NORTH EUGENE 0: At Ashland, Benjamin Lucero and David Lee had goals for Ashland in the Midwestern League opener at Ashland Middle School.

Lucero scored on a hard boot from 25 yards out in the seventh minute and Lee cashed in from close range in the 39th for the Grizzlies (5-3, 1-0 MWL), who have won five straight.

Goalkeeper Ferruccio Lemley and Tejas Leie Heyden combined on the shutout.

Girls Soccer

ASHLAND 2, NORTH EUGENE 1: At Ashland, freshman Mya Elder Hammond had two goals to help Ashland rally in the Midwestern League opener.

She scored off an assist by Tia Wilhelm three minutes into the second half, then connected again off an assist by Jessica Harrower in the 51st to put the Grizzlies (7-1-1, 1-0 MWL) on top to stay.

North Eugene dropped to 4-3-1, 0-1 in league.


BUTTE FALLS 3, TRIAD 1: At Butte Falls, Raleigh Weaver had 17 kills, Shawna Creech recorded 16 kills and Butte Falls prevailed, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 26-24, during Mountain Valley League action.

Taylor Meyers chipped in 40 assists and T’Neal Meyers four aces for the Loggers (5-3, 4-2 MVL), which had 40 digs as a team.

Boys Water Polo

MEDFORD 13, SHELDON 8: At Ashland, Bram Gibson and Micah Mills both tallied three goals as Medford upended Sheldon at the SOU pool.

Medford also picked up two goals apiece from Spencer Thompson, Cyrus Christianson and Carter Hazen.

Goalie Chris Ball made 11 blocks for Medford.

ASHLAND 19, NORTH EUGENE 6: At Ashland, with a few seconds left in the contest, Tristan Gavin scored his eighth goal on a length-of-the-pool shot as Ashland topped North Eugene at the SOU pool.

Gavin also pitched in five steals and a pair of assists while Devon Lancaster tallied three goals, two assists and three steals for the Grizzlies (8-5).

Ashland’s defense held North Eugene in check as far as shot attempts and Grizzlies’ goalie Vincent Wright made five blocks.

Girls Water Polo

SHELDON 12, MEDFORD 5: At Ashland, Marissa Drake scored three goals and Lindsay Richardson made the other two for Medford in the loss at the SOU pool.

Medford’s Andrea Babb came up with eight blocks in goal.

ASHLAND 19, NORTH EUGENE 5: At Ashland, captain Sabrina Scoggins recorded eight goals, five assists and four steals to guide Ashland past North Eugene at the SOU pool.

The Grizzlies (6-5) got three goals from Kelsey Gida and Amelia Zeve went for two goals, three assists and five steals.

Goalie Kyilyn Boehm made 15 blocks for the Grizzlies.
