Comets pick up two league wins
EUGENE — The Crater volleyball team came back from a nine-point deficit in the second set against Marist to take a 2-0 lead in the match, only to lose the next two sets and set up a winner-take-all fifth game on Saturday.
In the final set, the Comets regained their composure to ultimately prevail, 25-18, 27-25, 17-25, 13-25, 15-7, during Midwestern League action.
Crater (14-2, 8-1 MWL) also beat North Eugene, 25-11, 25-8, 25-14, on Saturday.
Against the Spartans (8-5, 6-2), Paige Berriochoa had a double-double for the Comets with 14 kills and 26 digs, while Nicole Davis added 40 assists, seven digs and three aces.
The Comets recorded 15 aces against the Highlanders (4-8, 1-6).
Destiny Fahndrich tallied seven kills and 12 digs and Berriochoa added 12 kills.
CLEARWATER CLASSIC: At Bend, Ashland made it into the silver medal bracket as the lowest of the eight seeded teams from pool play but still managed to win the division with wins over Bend, Ridgeview and host Summit at the 24-team event.
The Grizzlies lost to South Eugene and Jesuit but beat Redmond to gain the No. 8 seed to the silver bracket. After upsetting No. 1 seed Bend 25-18, 27-26, Ashland beat Ridgeview 25-18, 25-12 and then completed the run with a 14-25, 25-18, 16-14 win over a Summit squad that swept them in straight sets on Friday.
Myla Norvell served 10 straight points to set her team up at 10-1 in the second set of the championship match. In the final set, Summit was up 14-13 and serving for match point when Hope Baldrica scored one of her eight kills. The Grizzlies (15-4) served out the final two points, with Ellie Case getting a stuff block for the winning point.
Baldrica finished with five blocks and Case had six kills and four blocks, while Grace Lenthe added five kills and two blocks and Ocean Lumbreras had five kills and two blocks. Setter Jordan Tilley had 31 assists and four kills.
Among other local teams in the tourney, South Salem edged South Medford 25-11, 13-25, 16-14 and St. Mary’s Academy slipped by North Medford, 26-24, 27-26.
BUTTE FALLS 3, NORTH LAKE 0: At Butte Falls, sophomore Hanna Kuyukendall lead the way for Butte Falls with eight aces in the 25-23, 25-15, 25-22 Mountain Valley League victory.
Kuyukendall also helped build a large match lead in the second set with a 10-point service run for the Loggers (6-6, 5-5 MVL).
Junior Jade Stubbs also contributed three aces for Butte Falls.
GEORGE FOX CLASSiC: At Gervais, Phoenix’s Danielle Jantzer broke the sophomore school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18 minutes, 50 seconds and teammate Randy Mena recorded the Pirate program’s 16th fastest mark (16:26) at Willamette Mission State Park.
Nevina De Luca owned the previous sophomore record (19:00).
St. Mary’s Marissa Dobry finished in 18:27.
MEDFORD FALLS: At Albany, Medford’s boys team suffered an 18-9 loss to West Albany and the girls team was swept after a 15-2 loss to West Albany and 11-1 loss to South Eugene on Friday.
Micah Mills scored six goals and Chris Ball had eight blocks for the Medford boys.
Lindsay Richardson and Marissa Drake scored the lone goals against the West Albany girls, while Vanessa Babb scored against South Eugene and Andrea Babb combined for seven blocks in goal.
