Pirates tops in Skyline with win

MERLIN — Jesus Sixtos netted the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute and the Phoenix boys soccer team took over sole possession of first place in the Skyline Conference with a 2-1 victory over North Valley on Thursday.

Sixtos scored from 10 yards out on a well-placed cross by Liam Macleod, who drove up the field and to a corner before sending it.

The Knights (6-6, 4-4 Sky) capitalized first with Trinidad Flores’ header from 12 yards away on a corner kick in the 18th minute.

Phoenix’s Samuel Macias evened things in the 50th minute after skillfully bending in a corner kick.

Jorge Pinon led the way defensively for the Pirates (8-3, 7-1), who entered the match tied with Henley (9-1, 6-1) for first in the league standings.

HIDDEN VALLEY 1, KLAMATH UNION 0: At Klamath Falls, Abraham Martinez scored a late goal for Hidden Valley during Skyline Conference action.

The Mustangs improved to 5-6 overall, 4-4 in league.

EAGLE POINT 3, CHURCHILL 2, OT: At Eagle Point, Kevin Vandyke recorded a hat trick, including the go-ahead goal late in overtime, for Eagle Point during Midwestern League action.

Sebastian Tovar assisted on Vandyke’s first goal and Luis Gutierrez assisted on his second, both coming in the first nine minutes of the match for the Eagles (8-3-1, 2-2 MWL).

Gerardo Lopez assisted Vandyke on his final goal.


Midwestern League

CHURCHILL 4, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, four different players scored for Churchill during Midwestern League action.

Eagle Point dropped to 3-7-2 overall, 0-3-1 in league.

Skyline Confernce

NORTH VALLEY 4, PHOENIX 1: At Talent, McKenzie Comyford recorded a hat trick to lead North Valley during Skyline Conference action. Tristin Vandehey also scored and Brianna Robles and Isabella Schrader made assists for the Knights (5-7, 4-4 Sky), who were tied at 1-1 with Phoenix (0-11, 0-8) at halftime.

The Pirates’ Daniela Escobedo evened the match in the 11th minute after following up on a goalkeeper deflection.

HIDDEN VALLEY 1, KLAMATH UNION 0: At Murphy, Hidden Valley’s Misha Hamblin scored the go-ahead goal from 34 yards out in the 62nd minute for Hidden Valley during Skyline Conference action.

Freshman goalkeeper Erica Alfred recorded the shutout for the Mustangs (3-7-1, 3-5 Sky).
