Ashland defeats Marist in OT in boys soccer

EUGENE — Freshman Ben Lucero scored five minutes into overtime as Ashland defeated Marist 2-1 in Midwestern League boys soccer Friday.

The victory moves Ashland (7-4, 3-1 MWL) into a first place tie with Marist (8-3, 3-1) in the conference.

Lucero’s game-winning goal was volleyed in with the left foot from about seven yards out. The play started on a direct kick by David Lehrburger that went to Ian Rinefort, who passed to Lucero.

It was 1-1 at the end of regulation.

Marist took the initial lead on Jordan Pifer’s goal in the 20th minute.

Dylan Woodruff tied the game for Ashland on a close-in shot in the 35th minute. Bryce Rollins headed a pass to Woodruff off a direct kick by Cole Caster.

Marist missed a first-half penalty kick that hit the cross bar.

Tejas Leier-Heyden had 17 saves in net for the Grizzlies.

Girls Soccer

MARIST 2, ASHLAND 0: At Springfield, Ashland out-passed and out-possessed Marist but the Spartans made two first-half goals hold up.

Marist scored off a corner kick in the 16th minute then added a goal off a long shot in the 25th minute.

Marist (4-5-2, 2-1-1 MWL) moved ahead of Ashland (8-3-1, 2-1) into second place in the MWL standings.


PROSPECT 3, NORTH LAKE 2: At Prospect, Prospect pulled out a narrow victory in the fifth set for the Mountain Valley League win, 22-25, 25-17, 13-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Marissa Raines had 34 digs for the Cougars (7-9, 5-7 MVL), and Bailey VanWormer notched 18 digs and three kills. Savanna Breiholz was 18-for-18 serving and added 13 digs.
