Crusaders get first league football win in decade

The St. Mary’s football team used a determined running attack to claim its first league win since 2004.

The Crusaders racked up 489 yards on the ground en route to a 42-0 victory over Lakeview in the Southern Cascade League opener at Spiegelberg Stadium on Saturday.

St. Mary’s had not won a league contest since beating Riddle, 57-7, on Oct. 2, 2004 while part of the Class 2A Southern Cascade. The Crusaders played an independent schedule from 2011-2013 and were making their return to league action against the Honkers.

“It was a big day for us,” St. Mary’s head coach Jamie Young said. “To come back into the league and have a performance like this is great for our kids and alumni.”

Denten Edwards rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns (28, 38 and 10 yards) on 21 carries for St. Mary’s, which led 28-0 at halftime. Spencer Cox had 10 rushes for 84 yards and two scores and Spencer McCabe ran the ball 16 times for 95 yards and a touchdown.

McCabe and Bryce Bramscher both made interceptions and linebacker Graeden Bird also helped lead a strong defensive effort.
