Grizzlies top Churchill, take third in MWL

ASHLAND — Ashland trounced Churchill in straight sets to wrap up third place in its first season in the Midwestern Conference on senior night at Mountain Avenue Gym Friday.

The Grizzlies beat the Lancers 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 to finish 9-3 in the MWL. Crater went 11-1 in league play to claim the conference championship and Marist was second at 10-2.

Seniors Hope Baldrica, Jordan Tilley and Grace Lenthe led the Grizzlies (16-7), who will host a Class 5A play-in match on Tuesday. Baldrica had 11 kills and five blocks, Tilley 21 assists, six aces and three kills and Lenthe seven kills, eight digs and two blocks.

“It was a really great senior night,” Ashland coach Robin Akpan said. “It was exciting to see our seniors play but also how well our juniors and sophomores really supported our team tonight. It was a really solid win for us. Everything was working well for us tonight and the girls were really focused.”

Ashland, which hosts every team in the MWL plus South Medford in an eight-team tournament today, also got a match-high 14 digs out of sophomore Myla Norvell.

ASHLAND 14, COTTAGE GROVE 2: At Cottage Grove, Devon Lancaster scored three goals for Ashland.

The Grizzlies’ Ethan Croyle came up with four steals and tallied two goals. Kyler Norman, James Hawes and Tristan Gavin also scored two goals apiece.

Splitting time in goal, Vincent Wright recorded 10 blocks and Loden Donahoo had five to help Ashland improve to 17-5 overall.

On Thursday at the Southern Oregon University pool in Ashland, Ashland defeated Medford, 10-5, behind Gavin’s four goals, three assists and a steal and Luke Abell’s three goals, two assists and three steals. Medford’s Micah Mills had three goals, Cyrus Christianson scored twice and goalkeeper Christopher Ball made 11 saves.

In another game, Ashland beat Marist, 10-7, as Gavin recorded five goals and one assist and Wright blocked nine attempts.

Girls Water Polo

ASHLAND 14, COTTAGE GROVE 7: At Cottage Grove, Sabrina Scoggin, Kenya Mickey and Leilani Sukles each scored four goals to power Ashland.

Scoggin added three steals for the Grizzlies (12-5) and Sukles chipped in two steals and a pair of assists.

Grizzlies goalie Kyilyn Boehm had five blocks.

In a Thursday match at the Southern Oregon University pool, Ashland downed Medford 18-8. Mickey had five goals and one steal, Scoggin three goals, five assists and four steals and Isabelle Nicolier three goals. Boehm made five saves.

Medford’s Marissa Drake scored five goals, Vanessa Babb two and Emma Empol one. Goalie Andrea Babb had seven saves.
