Spartans stave off No. 6 Grizzlies

EUGENE — The Marist football team used a late-game interception to help seal its 14-8 win over No. 6 Ashland during Midwestern League action on Friday night.

The Grizzlies (6-2, 2-2 MWL) must beat Eagle Point next Friday to secure the league’s third and final automatic entry into the OSAA’s 16-team Class 5A bracket.

Trevor Vill’s interception at the Ashland 41-yard line for the Spartans came on fourth-and-12 with 1:17 to go. Prior to that, Ashland quarterback Kyle Weinberg had been sacked for a loss of 9 yards.

The Grizzlies — who have lost two straight — began their last drive at their 35.

The victory sets up a Halloween night matchup between Marist (6-2, 4-0) and Springfield (7-1, 4-0) for the MWL title. The Millers beat Crater, 39-21, on Friday.

The Spartans scored first on Quinn Cota’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Vill with 7:11 left in the first quarter. Ashland responded two minutes later when Weinberg ran in a TD from 1 yard out. Weinberg then connected with Parker Layton for the two-point conversion, giving the Grizzlies an 8-7 advantage.

Austin Tyner’s 43-yard TD reception from Cota late in the second quarter put Marist ahead for good. Neither team scored in the second half.

The Ashland defense held the Spartans to 202 yards and forced three turnovers, but the Grizz offense was contained to 150 yards.

Weinberg finished 12-for-25 passing for 90 yards and he ran the ball 14 times for 31 yards.

Ryne Robitz had 10 carries for 24 yards for the Grizzlies, while Shashi Penn made four catches for 31 yards and Max Montgomery had four catches for 29 yards.

Colin McGuire and Seth Cowan had two sacks apiece, while Karter Cox recorded six tackles and Cowan five tackles for Ashland.
