Comet named MVL player of year, first-team all-state

Crater senior middle hitter Paige Berriochoa was rewarded for a stellar year, taking home Midwestern League volleyball player of the year honors and being named to the Class 5A state first team.

Berriochoa finished the year with 305 kills, 50 blocks, 26 aces and 258 digs while hitting .382 for the Comets, who fell to second-ranked Bend 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 in the 5A consolation semifinals. Crater earned a conference title for the first time in 28 years and matched its best state finish by tying for seventh place this season.

Berriochoa also claimed second-team state tournament recognition.

The other locals on the first-team MVL list were Ashland’s Jordan Tilley and Hope Baldrica and Crater’s Kelsey Strouse, Nicole Davis and Destiny Fahndrich.

At the 4A level, Phoenix senior Adriana Mereida-Ford and Hidden Valley senior McKenzie Cushman were given second-team state honors.
