Crater in second at GP tournament

GRANTS PASS — Crater High advanced five wrestlers into today’s semifinals and stands in second place overall after Friday in the two-day Grants Pass Winter Kickoff tournament.

Henley leads the 37-school field with 97.5 points. Crater is second (93.5) and Eagle Point is third (66).

Crater’s Logan Meek (138), Cavin Gillispie (182) and James Pendleton (220) each advanced with a pair of falls in two matches apiece.

South Medford (8th, 48 points) moved two wrestlers into the semifinals — Brandon Brooks (182) and Moses Jackson (220). Each wrestler posted pins in both matches on the opening day.

Swimming

NEWPORT INVITE: At Newport, Phoenix’s Lauren Speaks and Ethan Shepherd led their respective swim teams to fourth-place finishes at the Newport Invitational.

Speaks triumphed in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Speaks timed 1 minute, 13.47 seconds and 2:26.96, respectively.

She, along with Emily Samudio, Katie Duffie and Tiona Hurd, took second place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:23.22. The same foursome placed third in the 200 medley relay (2:10.54).

Shepherd won the 50 free with a time of 23.36 seconds and was runner-up in the 100 butterfly, where he clocked a 59.45. Shepherd, Bryce Roy, Thomas Ward and Taylor Brown nabbed second in the 200 medley relay (1:54.77).

The Phoenix boys scored 39 points, while the winner — Newport — finished with 92. The Phoenix girls scored 42 points, while North Bend prevailed with 115.

Prep Hockey

NORTH MEDFORD 11, CRATER 3: Max Henry and Chase Courtney scored three goals each as undefeated North Medford romped in Southern Oregon League action at The Rrrrink.

The Black Tornado (3-0) jumped out to a 5-1 first period lead.

North Medford received one goal each from Jeremy Wood, Joshua Wu, Will Spence, Drew Snowden and Lindsey Courtney.

For Crater, Steven Renfro scored a pair of goals and Eric Mott had one goal.

Sophomore Evan Riggs filled in for North starting goalie Calvinn Casaday, who is on the road with the Southern Oregon Spartans. Riggs recorded seven saves, while Crater keeper Cameron Stacey stopped 22 shots.
