Pirates outlast Challengers in Christmas tourney

Thomas Skaff recorded 12 points and four rebounds to help the Phoenix boys basketball team beat Cascade Christian, 39-33, during round-robin play at the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic at Cascade Christian High on Friday.

Triston Hay had nine points and Ty Mahaffey five rebounds and two assists for the Pirates (4-3), who led 17-15 at halftime.

Phoenix helped seal the victory by making four free throws in the final two minutes.

Chad Morse had 11 points and Brandon Winter 10 for the Challengers (4-2).

CRATER 66, SANTIAM CHRISTIAN 50: Crater’s Race Reiter and Christian Reyes scored 22 points each and Taylor Kloke filled in effectively for the injured Gunnar Asher in the tournament’s Unlimited Division.

Reiter also pulled down eight rebounds and Reyes dished out four assists.

Kloke, a junior post, played good defense and contributed six points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Comets (4-2), who had to forfeit Thursday’s victory against Phoenix for using an ineligible player.

MAZAMA 69, ST. MARY’S 53: Michael Crennen’s 21 points paced the Crusaders (6-3), who take on Phoenix at Crater High tonight at 7:15.

The Crusaders received 13 points — including three 3-pointers — from Connor Vinyard and 11 points from Tyler West.

Taylor Bennett led the Vikings with 17 points.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN JV 60, ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 58, OT: Cascade Christian JV outscored short-handed Rogue Valley Adventist 31-20 in the fourth quarter and overtime to rally in the semifinals of the varsity division at Cascade Christian High.

RVA (7-2) only had six players available to start the game and Cascade Christian’s final two points came late in overtime on free throws with only three Red Tail Hawks on the court.

Nathaniel James paced RVA with 24 points and five rebounds, while Ben Dunn scored 16 to lead the Challengers.

ST. MARY’S JV 47, BUTTE FALLS 33: At Phoenix, Alex Cool-Hunsaker scored 12 points and Spencer Scofield and Luke McGonagle added eight points apiece for Butte Falls at Phoenix High.

St. Mary’s JV led 27-16 at halftime against the Loggers (0-7).

CRATER 50, LINCOLN (WASH.) 37: Courtney Setzer scored 17 points, Destiny Fahndrich had nine points and 10 rebounds and Crater sealed a spot in today’s Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic final with the victory at Cascade Christian High.

Kes Noles recorded 10 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Comets (5-1), who outscored Lincoln (4-3) 19-11 in the second quarter.

Tamia Braggs, a 6-foot-2 center, scored nine of her 10 points in the first quarter and fouled out late in the fourth as Setzer defended her well.

Meg Vasey led the Crusaders with 13 points, while Dakotah Rothfus and Rose Alvarez chipped in 11 apiece. Viv Juncal added nine for St. Mary’s (2-5).

Bailee Tally registered 19 points, six steals and a pair of blocks for the Pirates (2-4). Alyssa Wallack scored six points and assisted on six of Phoenix’s 15 made field goals.

BUTTE FALLS 35, EAGLE POINT JV 19: At Phoenix, Shawna Creech amassed 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists for Butte Falls at Phoenix High.

Raleigh Weaver recorded nine points, eight rebounds, seven blocks and two steals and Katie Munsell six points and 15 rebounds for the Loggers (4-3), who led 13-12 at halftime.
