Crater takes second at GP tourney

GRANTS PASS — Crater crowned two champions in Nate Walters and Cavin Gillispie and had three others finish as runners-up to finish second in the team standings on second and final day of the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff wrestling tournament at Grants Pass High.

Henley won the 37-team tournament with 206 points after posting three champions and one runner-up, with Crater close behind at 190.5 points. Marshfield (153), Grants Pass (128) and Eagle Point (111) rounded out the top five teams.

Walters cruised to the title at 145 pounds with an 8-0 major decision over Eli Garrard of Douglas, while Gillispie was steadfast in edging Klamath Union’s Chase Anderson, 6-5, in the final at 182.

Finishing second for Crater were Zeth Brower (106), Logan Meek (138) and Jason Comer (160).

Phoenix, which placed eighth under first-year head coach Joel Gibson, crowned a pair of tournament champions in Richard Orndorf (132) and Trace Vega (195), while Justin Knight finished fourth at 170.

Eagle Point was led by a third-place showing from Lorren Denn (138), while Cascade Christian’s Luke Valle was third at 126.

South Medford finished 10th in the team standings behind a second-place effort from Moses Jackson at 220 and a third-place outing by Brandon Brooks at 182.

NORTH MEDFORD 13, SOUTH MEDFORD 4: Chase Courtney scored four goals and Max Henry notched three goals and four assists for his second straight hat trick to propel North Medford in Southern League action at The RRRink.

Jeremy Wu and Mikaen Magee each added two goals for North Medford (4-0), while Drew Snowden and Joshua Wu also scored.

South Medford (1-3) got a pair of goals from Tyler Hansen and one each from Kyle Lund and Nolan Parrish.
